Mutton Camp Aspen Stand

Historically, aspen stands were regenerated through drastic
disturbances such as wildfires, Today, wildfires are extinguished as
quickly as possible. A healthy aspen stand provides habitat for Ruffed
Grouse and native sensitive plants such as calachortas. This aspen
stand was selected for management because of the poor health of the
older trees and the lack of younger seedlings.
The Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) constructed the buck and pole fence
in 1994 to control vehicular traffic and livestock grazing on the aspen
seedlings. Future management will include periodic removal of most of
the conifers and underburning the stand to stimulate aspen regeneration.
Partners for the project have been the Ruffed Grouse Society and the
Native Plant Society of Oregon.
